  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Ethel Marian Sumner (Maie) Casey (1891-1983), writer, artist and flyer, was born on 13 March 1891. She studied at the Westminster School of Art, London. She volunteered in England during World War I at (Sir) Douglas Shields’s Hospital for Wounded Officers and then with Vera Deakin’s Australian Wounded and Missing Inquiry Bureau. Casey married the politician, governor and governor-general Richard Gavin Gardiner (Baron) on 24 June 1926 at St James’s parish church, Westminster. A pilot accorded membership with Amelia Earheart's Ninety-Nines and talented public speaker, she traveled internationally doing war work and in support of her husband's political career. A published author, her most known work is 'An Australian Story 1837-1907'. She died on 20 January 1983 at Edrington in Victoria and was buried beside her husband at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Macedon.
