  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Thomas John Houghton (1861-1933), printer and publisher, was the son of George Houghton and Frances Fairclough. He married Catherine Susanna Kitsch in the Church of England, Grafton on 31 December 1884. They had 1 daughter and 2 sons.
    Houghton arrived in New South Wales in 1866. He was apprenticed for six years as a printer from age 14 then worked for nine years as a printer on 'Hansard' with the Government Printing Office. He joined the typographical association and became a part time secretary of the Trades and Labour Council (TLC). In the late 1890's he took an active part in the Federation campaign. Thomas travelled to Tasmania and returned to Sydney in 1904 and worked on the Commerce and Manufacturers Journal. He became an employer in 1923 and resigned as a representative on the Trades and Labour Council (TLC). Houghton was one of the Labor Party's founders.
