  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Sir James Martin (1820-1886), Premier and Chief Justice of N.S.W., married in 1853 Isabella (1832-1909), sister of William Alexander Long (1839-1915). James and Isabella Martin had eight sons and seven daughters. Margaret and Mary Anne Martin were sisters and George Martin a brother of Sir James Martin. Mary Martin (1866-1956), a daughter of Sir James and Lady Martin, married Wilfred A. Inman in 1897. Inman founded a school for boys first at Erowal, Bellevue Hill, Sydney, then at Carrara, Vaucluse, Sydney and finally at Tudor House, Moss Vale, N.S.W.

    Inside cover notes, 'compiled by R. Ormsby Martin between 1946 and March 1948'.
    Includes 155 photographic prints, ca. 1865-1948, mostly being portraits of Martin, Ormsby and Warner family members; 12 ephemera items including business cards of Lewis Ormsby Martin as Minister of Justice, NSW, and invitations to him and his wife to the jubilee celebrations of the University of Sydney in 1902; 1 cartoon from the King's School Magazine of June 1924, by J. H. Copeman; 20 clippings including 1 of the Ormsby family crest - other clippings relate to family matters including several newspaper obituaries of Lewis Ormsby Martin; 1 manuscript note (inside envelope stuck to album leaf) which Antionette Ormsby wrote the details of her children's births from 15 June 1865-18 September 1877; 1 manuscript signature of Lewis Ormsby Martin; 4 manuscript pages titled, 'Family Notes', which are the genealogy of the Ormsby family

    Contains 66 photographic prints, many are portraits that are undated and untitled. Includes 2 portraits of 'Basil', 1 with him holding a tennis racquet in 1886 and a family portrait taken outside a house at Groongal, NSW. Also includes many photos of buildings and scenery including 'Woollahra House' and scenes in Ireland and Scotland in 1882, such as sailing with the Royal Clyde Yacht Club and Giant's Causeway

    Written on the first page is the height and weight details of Charlie May in 1912 and 1913 and that his first game of cricket was on December 30, 1912 and that he is 'going to be another Clem Hill'. Includes 40 photographic prints, mostly portraits and family portraits including many of Charlie May (beginning ca. 1908) as an infant and a boy. Also includes 2 pictures of the opening of St. Lukes Church at Glenquarry, NSW, in the late 1800s; portraits of Walter A. Inman at the Wellington Club in New Zealand, 1910 and a signed portrait of a World War I soldier, 1917. Also 1 drawing of a man and a girl, ca. 1898; 6 ephemera items being memorial service notes for King Edward and Sir Harry Holdsworth Rawson, 1910; prayers for the coronation of King George and Queen Mary in 1911 and a postcard. Also 2 newspaper clippings, 1 regarding Charlie May's first public appearance at Manly Baths in 1910
