  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Arthur and Keith were the sons of Sir David Gilbert Ferguson, judge of the New South Wales Supreme Court.

    Arthur embarked on the 25 June 1915 on board HMAT Berrima with the 20th Battalion. He was killed in action in France, 14 June 1916 and is buried in the Brewery Orchard Cemetery, Bois Grenier, France. He obtained the rank of Captain.

    Keith embarked on the 18 May 1916 on board HMAT Demosthenes. He was with the 3rd Division, Cyclist Battalion. He obtained the rank of Lieutenant. He returned wounded in 1917 and continued his law degree. He became a King's Counsel in 1944 and also a judge of the New South Wales Supreme Court.
  • Scope and Content
    Family album, photographs and portraits of the Ferguson family, including brothers Arthur Gardere, Keith Aubrey, and their sister Dorothy. Most of the photographs are of Arthur and Keith from their student days to their service in World War I.

    Photographs of Arthur Gardere Ferguson include several copies of a group portrait of the officers of the 20th Battalion A.I.F. 1915 together with a typescript copy of a letter sent by Arthur dated France, 20th April 1916 to his mother identifying the men in the portrait. Arthur was killed in action 14 June 1916. Other photographs include 7 images taken on board the HMAT Berrima in 1915 taken by Lient. Victor Hubert Springhall of the shipboard ceremony "Dunking". Included also is a photograph of Arthur's grave in the Brewery Orchard Cemetery, Bois Grenier, France.
