The Sydney Sailors' Home was founded in 1859 as a benevolent association devoted to reforming and housing itinerant seafarers. Construction of a building commenced in 1863 and was completed in 1865. Nearby Cadman's cottage provided accommodation for the superintendent until the 1920s. The Home was closed in 1979.
