  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Sir Walter Leonard, former chairman of Ampol Petroleum, was born in Grafton, New South Wales, in 1915. He joined Ampol in 1938 as a clerk, but was in the RAAF 1942-1945 in bomber command and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He re-joined Ampol and rose to Chairman in 1970. He was also a director of CRA, the Australian Industry Development Corp, Interscan, the Science Foundation for Physics withing the University of Sydney, the Sydney Cove Authority, and the National Parks and Wildlife Foundation. He also served as president of Legacy, a director of the Smith Family, on the board of the Salvation Army and president of the Royal Life Saving Society of Australia.

With Qantas Empire Airways Ltd, Ampol sponsored the first international men’s bowls championships, at Sydney in 1966. Sixteen nations vied for the W. M. Leonard Trophy, which was to be contested every four years. Having seen the popularity of ten-pin bowling in the United States, Leonard enlisted Sir Frank Packer’s publications to promote the pastime. Bowling Centres (Holdings) Ltd was incorporated in 1960 with Leonard and Packer as two of the directors and Leslie James Thompson, Ampol’s chairman, presiding.

He was named as Australian Father of the Year in 1969, and was knighted in the Queen's Birthday Honours for "services to industry" in 1977.
