  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    The Rachel Forster Hospital for Women in Redfern, Sydney, was founded in 1922 by 6 women doctors, and named after the wife of Australia's seventh Governor-General, Henry Foster. An arthritis clinic which was established in the 1960s specialised in bone and hip replacement, and of which the majority of beds were devoted to arthritic and orthopaedic care around this time. The hospital closed in June 1996 and the former site has been redeveloped.

    This collection contains photographs and drawings of the Rachel Forster Hospital, including images of hospital site, F.M. Gillespie's presentation of cheques, board members, centre personnel, hospital Fetes, medical staff, Carols by Candlelight event and publicity shots.
