  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

John Larking Scarvell (1791-1861), a captain in the East India Company and magistrate at Windsor, N.S.W., married Sarah Redmond at St James's Church, Sydney, in March 1828. John Scarvell retired from the East India Company shortly after his marriage to Sarah and they resided at Clare House (Killarney), in Oakville, N.S.W.. They had ten children, of whom eight survived infancy.

His marriage to Sarah Redmond was his second marriage. John L. Scarvell married his first wife, Isabella Campbell, in England in February 1815. At the time of his marriage he was in the service of the East India Company as the captain of the ship 'Forbes'. They had a son, Henry Ramsay Scarvell (b. 1813?). Isabella died at sea on board the 'Phillip Dundas' and was buried in St Philip's Church, Sydney, in January 1828.

In 1855 John Scarvell commissioned artist Richard Noble to paint individual portraits of his family. Over the course of the year while residing at Clare House, Noble completed portraits of John and Sarah Scarvell (1809-1873) (ML 1251), and the six eldest Scarvell children: John Redmond Barnes (1830-1855) (ML 1194); Sidney (1832-1875); George (1834-1877); Edward Augustus (1835-1883); Sarah Winefred Isabella Mary (1837-1929) (ML 1339); and Elizabeth Mary (1840-1907) (ML 1195).

John Larking Scarvell died in April 1861.
