  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Jack Noel Kilgour, artist and teacher, was born in Melbourne, Vic., in 1900. From 1929-1930 he studied at the Sydney Art School. In 1931 he married fellow student Nancy May Davidson. On 6 May 1931 Jack and Nancy sailed from Sydney, N.S.W. on board the ship Esperance Bay which berthed at Southampton, England on 20 June 1931. In London, Jack Noel Kilgour, Sir William Dobell and Frederick H. Coventry became the centre of a group of expatriate Australian artists. In 1939 Jack and Nancy Kilgour returned to Sydney and in the same year Jack Kilgour was appointed a teacher at East Sydney Technical College. Later, as a widower, he married Barbara Mary Millard

    Nancy May Kilgour nee Davidson (1904-1954), author and artist, wrote mostly short stories. She often wrote under the pseudonym of Julia Barrett
  • Scope and Content
    Collection includes: self portraits of Jack Kilgour and portraits of Nancy Kilgour and the artist's mother; illustrations for Alice in Wonderland and The Ancient Mariner; landscapes; pen and ink drawings for Ure Smith's Australian National Journal; drawings of people at East Sydney Technical College. Also included is an oil sketch landscape probably near Eltham by Jack KIlgour's father in 1902 and a selection of drawings and paintings by Nancy Kilgour.
    Sketchbook/folder by Jack Kilgour contains cut out and pasted in drawings of people on ferries, buses and trams, 1920s.
    Sketchbook by Nancy KIlgour contains mainly rough figure drawings.
