  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    George and Kate Noble were the donor's great-grandparents. The donor provided biographical information in relation to the portraits, which was recorded in the following notes by the Mitchell Library.
  • Scope and Content
    MIN 453
    George Noble, great grandfather of Mrs Gange (who was digging on the Castlemaine & other places) (in gold mining shirt). Letters refer to his diggings and his wife's search for him over a period of three years. He left his family because his wife [space] Noble) induced his daughter who was only 16 1/2 years to marry Mrs Gange's grandfather who was 45 at the time of the marriage to Ankerson.

    Mrs George Noble (Kate). She lived on a houseboat in Melbourne and did odd sewing jobs.

    MIN 455
    Matthew(?) Noble, the son of Mr & Mrs George Noble and brother of Mrs Ankerson. The letters show him to be a cadger and gambler so says Mrs Gange. Mr Ankerson finally paid his passage home to England.

    MIN 456
    Ann Ankerson [i.e. Sarah Ann?] the wife of Richard(?) Ankerson and the daughter of Mr & Mrs George Noble.

    Richard Ankerson who married Miss Ann Noble [i.e. Sarah Ann?] (to her father's disgust) and who in later years contributed to the support of his mother and father in law and their son, finally paying for their return passage to England. Carte-de-visite by Frederick Cole, London.

    Leather cases for MIN 453-MIN 455 are lacking a cover. MIN 453, bottom edge of case is partly detached. MIN 454 lacks glass pane and preserver; brass mat and image are loose. MIN 455 is missing top edge of case, and lacking brass mat, preserver and glass pane, image is loose. MIN 456 is in a complete case.
