  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Geoffrey Townshend worked as a cartoonist for the Bulletin from 1911, and also produced watercolours. After enlisting in 1915 he served for 3 years in France. He produced drawings from the Western Front and France for the ‘Aussie’.

    WATERCOLOURS
    Approx. 42 watercolours, some signed and dated. Mostly are preliminary drawings. Some are painted on verso.

    SKETCHES
    Approx. 130 sketches, mostly pencil, some ink. Sketches are mainly preliminary sketches for other works. Some sketches have notes concerning shading and colours.

    SKETCHBOOKS
    2 spiral bound and 1 small pad containing preliminary pencil and watercolour drawings.

    WORLD WAR I MATERIAL
    1. 2 photographic portraits by May Moore. G.K. Townshend in army uniform, and Mrs. Townshend.
    2. Christmas card titled, 'Xmas Greetings from Somme Land'. Inscribed, 'My present home from Geoffrey Keith'. Signed and dated G.K. Townshend, 11/12/16. Watercolour depicting man doing washing outside a small house.
    3. Watercolour, titled on back 'Rouen, 1917'.
    4. Watercolour, titled 'Send them books! Send books to library [?] service, Bent St, Sydney'. Image of soldiers outside tent.

    8. Pencil sketch, signed G.K. Townshend. Titled, 'Hamburg, Germany'.
    9. Manuscript note probably a caption for a cartoon. "VDC's on maneuvers, moving through scrub. Trees are being bent almost double by a shrieking wind and rain is lashing down. Obviously a terrific storm. O.C. to men, 'Now, above all, silence! Remember, men, even the sound of a snapping twig may reveal our presence to the enemy!'
    10. Small album of pencil and watercolour sketches from Northern France, mainly in Albert. Some are dated between July and August 1916.

    CLIPPINGS
    24 clippings mostly from 'The Bulletin' and 'Australian Woman's Mirror' and 'The Sydney Mail'. Dates range from August 4, 1927 to June 18, 1935. Images are cartoons and illustrations for serials and short stories. They depict romances, soldiers, and Australian bush scenes. A few published illustrations are also in the watercolours and sketches as preliminary works.
