    C. Fowler was a private in the New South Wales Infantry, sailing with the first contingent of volunteers for South Africa 3 November 1899. He arrived at Capetown 6 December 1899 and saw action in the area along the Orange and Modder Rivers. In January 1900, his unit became part of the Mounted Infantry Brigade. He was sent to hospital on 10 April 1900
