  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

These photographs were taken, probably in 1970 or 1971, in anticipation of the demolition of Pitt Street Congregational Church for development. A "Final service" was held in the church at 7pm on Sunday 10 January 1971. The church was closed for some years and services were held in a chapel at 305 Pitt Street. A Green Ban was placed on the project by the Builders' Labourers Federation and the development did not proceed. The church reopened in June 1974.
  • Collection history
"As you know, the Pitt Street Congregational Church is to be demolished, and the last service was held in it last Sunday. The "Herald" took a series of photographs of the interior, partly because of the early association of the Fairfax family with this church. It occurred to me that a set of these photographs should be in the Library, and I am sending them to you herewith" -- letter from donor on file, 13 January 1971; "Since I spoke to you on Monday I have had a "Herald" photographer take an exterior photograph of the Pitt Street Congregational Church, for filing with the other photographs which I sent to you earlier." -- letter from donor on file, 27 January 1971
