  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Reverend Thomas Woodforde, 1779-1836, rector of Ansford and Paddington, Somerset married Mary Braithwaite in 1807. Their son, Edward Howe Woodforde, born 1818, emigrated to Australia in 1837, where he worked sheep and cattle stations in NSW and latter settled in Williamstown, Victoria. Their daughter, Julia Mary Woodforde, died 1878. married Reverend Edmund Leopold Lockyer, born 1816, rector of Westcote Barton, Oxfordshire, in 1839. Mary Woodforde's brother, Lieutenant Robert Braithwaite, died 1805, owned property at Windsor, NSW

    Series 01: Mary Woodforde, Mrs Thomas nee Braithwaite, 1803-1852
    Letters received, 28 August 1803-24 January 1852, mainly from her son, Edward Howe Woodforde, describing his voyage to Sydney, his time spent with Major Edmund Lockyer ar Lockyersleigh, NSW, his attempts to make his fortune working sheep and cattle stations in the Binalong and Yass areas, NSW and near the Edward and Murray Rivers, NSW, often in partnership with Patrick Brougham, the depressed state of the Colony's economy, trouble with the aborigines, the Victorian gold rush, mutual acquaintances and family matters
