  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

The New South Wales Branch of the Federated Ship Painters and Dockers' Union of Australia dates back to May 1883, when it was known as the Balmain Laborers Union. The rules of the Union were revised in August 1900 and, as a consequence, it adopted Painters and Dockers' Union as its name. On 23 July 1901 the Union affiliated with the Eight Hour Committee. The Union was closely associated with the Sydney Labor Council, which changed its name to the Labor Council of New South Wales in 1908. In 1916 the Union became the Federated Ship Painters and Dockers' Union of Australia. The early history of the Union is related in Issy Wyner's book, With Banner Unfurled (1983), located at ML 331. 8812382 / 2
