  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Harry and Oceana (“Oce”) Newton Scott built their 44-foot wooden wishbone ketch, New Silver Gull, on weekends and began to live aboard in ca.1944. In December 1947, when Harry Newton Scott was 60, Harry left his business as a civil engineer and surveyor - by Oce's account, spontaneously - and the couple began a 12-year cruise which took in the Pacific, both coasts of America, and the West Indies, logging 43,000 miles and 486 ports of call. On their return they continued to live aboard at a mooring in Davis Marina, Balgowlah until Harry Newton Scott died in January 1976. Oceana put the yacht up for sale in April 1977. Source: Sun-Herald 7 April 1977.

Utiekah III left Williamstown, Victoria in 1927 and cruised around the Pacific stopping at many places including Lord Howe Island, Norfolk Island, Tonga, Samoa, Suva, Fiji and returning to Williamstown in 1928.

New Silver Gull spent 12 years, 1947-1959, cruising the Pacific and east and west coasts of America: Sydney - Tasmania - New Zealand - Society Islands - Samoa - Fiji - Canton Island - Honolulu - British Columbia - San Juan Islands - San Francisco - California - Jamaica & U.S. East Coast - West Indies - Panama - Pago Pago - Suva - Sydney. “The wandering Scotts”, Harry Newton Scott’s manuscript account of his cruise and preparations for it, is at MLMSS 3256.
