Lachlan Macquarie, 1762-1824, was born on Ulva in the Scottish Hebrides. He joined the British army in 1776 and served in Canada, America and Jamaica. In 1787 he accepted the senior lieutenancy in the 77th Regiment and arrived in Bombay the following year. He remained there on and off until 1807 by which time he had achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1809 he was appointed Governor of New South Wales and served in that position until 1821 - Scope and ContentAutograph letter signed to his uncle Murdoch Maclaine of Lochbuy, Scotland, 25 December 1792, written from Bombay, wishing his relatives a Merry Christmas. Macquarie states his intention of remaining in India until he has made enough money to live in comfort in Scotland and is hopeful that the expiration of the East India Company's charter will open up promotion opportunities for the King's Officers
