In March 1978, the Queensland Government announced its intention of assuming control over the Aurukun and Mornington Island Aboriginal communities which had previously been managed by the Uniting Church. After intervention by the Commonwealth Government, an agreement was reached between it and the Queensland Government whereby the Queensland Government would legislate to set up two new shires of Aurukun and Mornington Island - Scope and ContentTen kits and a resume of the Church's attempt at dialogue with the Queensland Government on Aboriginal advancement at Aurukun and Mornington Island. Includes copies of letters, press releases, extracts from reports, circulars, telegrams, memoranda, transcripts of interviews, speeches, addresses, statements, newsletters, newspaper clippings, articles, survey results, maps, government acts, 1968-1978. The material documents the events leading up to and following the announcement of the Queensland Government of its intentions to assume control of the Aurukun and Mornington Island Aboriginal communities
