Henry Kendall had one brother, Basil Edward Kendall, and three sisters, Christina Jane, Mary Josephine and Edith Emily. Their father died in 1852 leaving money in trust for them in the care of Thomas Surfleet Kendall and Thomas Bowden. During the 1860s Henry Kendall was the sole supporter of his mother and sisters, a situation which he found difficult on his salary.
