    John Coleridge Patteson, who became Bishop of Melanesia in 1861, had initiated the first Melanesian Mission with Bishop Selwyn of New Zealand in 1854. When Patteson was killed by natives in 1871 this fund was formed in his memory, with the intent of raising money for the Melanesian Mission
