  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Philip Gidley King (1817-1904), a pastoralist, was born in October 1817 at Parramatta, Sydney, the eldest son of Captain Phillip Parker King and his wife Harriet, nee Lethbridge. Between 1826 and 1830 he sailed with his father on the ship Adventure to survey the southern coast of South America. In December 1831 King joined the H.M.S. Beagle as a midshipman on a voyage to survey the South American coast. During this voyage he developed a lifelong friendship with Charles Darwin. In January 1836 he returned to Sydney, entering the service of the Australian Agricultural Company in 1842. He died on 5 August 1904 in Sydney.

Bavarian artist, Johann Moritz Rugendas (1802-1858) is well known for works depicting landscapes and ethnographic subjects in South America. He first travelled to Brazil between 1821 and 1823. From 1831 to 1834 he lived in Mexico, settling in Chile from 1834 to 1845, when he also painted in Argentina and Peru.
