    Collection of World War (1914-1918) material of Norah Millicent Platt nee Elder.
  • Scope and Content
    GREETING CARDS

    1. Card with silk insert in the shape of an envelope. Holds a small card "I am thinking of you"; Colour embroidery with the symbol of the A.S.C. (Army Service Corps). Latin verse around emblem, 'Honi soit qui mal y pense'. Inscription on verso. "France 24.4.17. Dear Miss Elder. Just a few lines to let you know that I am quite well, hoping you are the same. We are out for a spell at present after having a pretty hard time of it. With Kindest regards to yourself and all at home, I remain yours very sincerely E. Sachse. To Miss N. Elder 36 Princes Street Dawes Point Sydney N.S.W."

    2. Card with pale blue edges, decorated with blue, white and red flowers. Inscription on verso. "With best wishes from E. Sachse, to Miss N. Elder 36 Princes Street Dawes Point Sydney N.S.W."

    3. Card with 'Remembrance'. Insert of coloured embroidery with the words 'Until the end'. Inscription, "From E. Sachse, to Miss N. Elder, July 3, 17, France. With best wishes to all home"

    PHOTOGRAPHS

    11 photographs of young men in civilian clothes and military uniform of the First World War. Most are unidentified. Inscriptions:
    "Dear Nora, Do you know who this fellow is just got. ... thinks its great, Mum thinks so too will keep it too in a frame, your loving Boy Sim".
    "I suppose you will recognise this on the other side, yours A.W. Olson, Corunna, S. Coast".
    "Dear Nora, In case I have altered and you would not know me I am in the back row right-hand side marked with a cross, Sid. To Miss N. Elder 36 Princes Street Dawes Point Sydney N.S.W."
    "Yours sincerely Sid, from France, 1917".

    TEXTUAL MATERIAL

    Form of Service, authorized to be used at church parades of the Australian Military Forces, inscribed W. Lenny.

    Book titled, "Memorial of the German East Coast raids and bombardment by sea and air. Enlarged edition for Sage, 6 Lynn Street, Bookseller and Stationer, West Hartlepool". Inscribed on inside of back cover, "Dear Nora, I thought this would give you some idea of the damage that was done to Hartlepool and I might say this is not all of it as it would take a bigger book. Hope you like it, best regards, Sim." Book contains images and text describing the bombing of the north east English town of Hartlepool, Yorkshire, 1914.
