The manuscript commences with a note in the same hand stating that 'the following interesting narrative was given to me by a friend who sailed on the same ship with Mr. Atkin, subsequent to the events narrated: and was copied by him from his journal'. - Published InformationThis account with many alterations in details was published in the United Service Journal, pt. 1, 1830 pages 649-658 and a much edited version, possibly from another text, appeared in R. McNab, Historical Records of New Zealand 1908, vol. 1 pages 687-698.
