  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Stuart Alexander Donaldson, 1812-1867, first premier of New South Wales, merchant and pastoralist, was son of a London merchant with Australian trade connections. He was sent to Mexico for business training from 1831 to 1834, and in 1835 went to Sydney to work for his father's Sydney associates, Richard Jones and Alexander Riley. In 1838, when Jones retired,
    Donaldson became manager. He bought land in Melbourne, and in 1840 took up land in New England and ran sheep. Donaldson was elected to the Legislative Council in 1848, and was premier of New South Wales for a short time in 1856. In 1859 he returned to England, and was knighted in 1860.

    Personal correspondence between Donaldson, his parents, uncle, aunt, and brother, and business correspondence regarding affairs of Donaldson, Wilkinson and Company (later Donaldson, Lambert and Company) in London, and Richard Jones, in Sydney. Also includes some of Jones business correspondence dated several years prior to Donaldson's arrival in Sydney. Correspondents include Donaldson's father, Stuart Alexander Donaldson; uncle, Alexander Donaldson, and Richard Jones
