William Schofield, 1793-1878, Wesleyan missionary, was born in England. In 1827, Schofield arrived in Van Diemen's Land, and was appointed first missionary chaplain at Macquarie Harbour. From 1832-1851, he held circuit appointments in New South Wales and Victoria - Scope and ContentConsists mainly of various letters addressed to Schofield at Macquarie Harbour, including several from convicts, whom he had helped to place in employment in Hobart, informing him of their present circumstances, giving news of others, and thanking him for the spiritual and material help he had given them during their period at Macquarie Harbour and also farewell letters on Schofield's departure from Macquarie Harbour. Also includes some later documents concerning Schofield, among which are a power of attorney, the marriage license of Thomas Towle and Sarah Ann Townsend, articles of indenture of John Pullen apprenticing him to Samuel Paul, a register of deaths at Macquarie Harbour during Schofield's ministry and instructions from the Wesleyan Methodist Society in London
