    Hovenden Hely was an Australian explorer and politician. He took part in Leichhardt's 1842 expedition and headed the expedition to find Leichhardt in 1852. He was a member of the New South Wales Legislative Assembly between 1856 and 1857.

    Hely describes volunteering for the expedition, embarking on the steamer Thistle with Daniel Bunce and Henry Brown, an aboriginal from Newcastle, and the daily events of the journey including encounters with aboriginals and difficulties with supplies
