    Matthew Flinders, 1774-1814, captain in the navy, bydrographer and discoverer, was born in England. He joined the navy, and by 1801, his work exploring and charting the coasts of Australia was being recognized. when returning to Londn with his charts and papers, on the Cumberland, Flinders put in to Mauritius, and was imprisoned by the French from December 1803 until June 1810.

    Letter written from Isle of France to William Pearce at the Admiralty re his imprisonment, and expressing fears for his seniority in the service.
