  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

George Forbes, 1857-1936, was a solicitor and author. Grandson of Sir Francis Forbes and son of David Forbes, he followed a long judicial tradition. His own interests in crime and punishment, however, took the form of compiling studies of notorious criminals. His first published work, in 1883, was a drama, and his other works are romantic novels and local history, especially criminal.

Evidently unpublished holograph manuscript, compiled between 1913 and the author's death, 7 May 1936.
  • Scope and Content
Journalistic accounts of the crime, trial and punishment of numerous criminals, with Darlinghurst Gaol as the unifying factor. Chapter one gives a brief history of Darlinghurst Gaol, and the subsequent 18 chapters deal with one case each, covering the period 1841-1903. Two newspaper cuttings re Darlinghust Gaol and a newspaper advertisement for one of Forbes's works, 'Under the broad arrow', mounted on last three folios. The last is dated 17 December 1913.
