Charles Joseph La Trobe, 1801-1875, was born in London on Hugenot extraction. In 1839 he was appointed Superintendent of the Port Phillip district. He carried on a large correspondence with Gipps, the Governor. La Trobe was Governor-General of Victoria, 1851-1854 - Scope and ContentPersonal letters to Sir George Gipps relating to land sales in the Melbourne area, particularly La Trobe's own blocks. La Trobe mentions mutual acquaintances, and also gives Gipps information relating to William Hinton and George William Cobb. Also contains letters regarding Judge Jeffcott and letter from Jeffcott to La Trobe
