  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Friedrich Wilhelm Ludwig Leichhardt, 1813-1848, naturalist and explorer, was born in Germany and arrived in Sydney in February 1842. In 1844-1845, he led an expedition from Moreton Bay to Port Essington, and in 1848 disappeared when leading an expedition to cross to the Swan River. No evidence showing conclusively what happened to the expedition has been found

    Detailed journal of Leichhardt's first nine months in New South Wales, with description of the natural history, geology, climate, and fossils o the Sydney, Newcastle and Hunter River areas. Also mentions men with whom he came into contact, including Revered W. B. Clarke and Helenus Scott. Interspersed with the text of the journal are copies of letters to William Nicholson and others

    Carbon copy is in Mitchell Library with Laube's corrections entered by M. Aurousseau, 1963, and further noted by M. Aurousseau. The corrections have not been added to the text of this copy
