An amateur snake collector from Randwick, Sydney, Kevin Budden was on a trip to far north Queensland in 1950 in search of snake specimens. Budden dreamt of capturing the highly feared and elusive taipan alive as no anti-venine existed at the time. During the capture of a taipan, Kevin Budden was bitten twice and died later the same day, 28 July 1950, at Cairns Base Hospital.
