  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John McLerie, 1809-1874, solider and police officer, enlisted as a private in the Scots Fusilier Guards. In 1838 he was commissioned as ensign and adjutant of the 58th Regiment. and was promoted lieutenant in June 1841. He arrived in Hobart October 1844, and soon transferred to Sydney. He served in the fist Maori War in New Zealand, 1845-1847, and on returning to Sydney was appointed adjutant and paymaster of the New South Wales Mounted Police Force. In September 1849, he became principal gaoler in Sydney, and on retiring from the Army in 1850, superintendent of police. In 1855, McLerie was appointed Captain and Commandant of the New South Wales Yeomanry Cavalry, and also inspector-general of police in October 1856. McLerie was a prominent freemason, and was involved with various charitable institutions
