  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    John Walpole Willis, 1793-1877, judge, was born in England, and was called to the Bar in 1816. In 1827, he was nominated as a judge in Upper Canada, and was given a judicial appointment in British Guiana. Willis was appointed a judge of the Supreme court of New South Wales, and arrived in Sydney in 1838. Willis was appointed resident judge for Port Phillip, and was soon in conflict with the Bar and influential citizens. In 1843, Governor Gipps removed Willis from office, and he returned to England
