W. R. Carpenter & Company Ltd was founded by Walter Randolf Carpenter in 1914. The company established plantations, stores, trading stations and shipping services in the Southwest Pacific, and established an air service operating in New Guinea in 1933. The airline flew between Australia and New Guinea from 1938 until 1942 when its aircraft were commandeered by Australian and British forces. Ray Melrose was commissioned by R. W. Stoke to write the history of the company
