- ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY
William Wilberforce was a prominent abolitionist and social reformer in England during the nineteenth century. He was elected to the House of Commons in 1780, at the age of 21, resigning in 1825 after a political career dominated by his campaign for the abolition of slavery. - Scope and ContentThis letter, addressed to ‘The Revd Mr Cartwright’ and dated 25 March 1820, serves as a letter of introduction for ‘a young man named Chandler’ who was going to settle in New South Wales. The Rev Cartwright is most probably Rev Robert Cartwright, who was at the time the Chaplain at Liverpool, having previously held that position at Windsor.
