  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    William Milne Burgess (1886-1970) was the third child of Rev. John Burgess. He was a gunner with 7 Field Artillery Brigade in the First World War, embarking on 11 May 1916 on HMAT Argyllshire. His brother, Stewart Salmond Burgess, was killed in the war in 1918 near Villers Bretonneux. William lived at the Walter Liberty Vernon-designed house St Helens (originally Merstham), in Wycombe Rd, Neutral Bay, with his family, 1939-1960.   • Collection history
    The photographs belonged to the donor's father, and were left to her when he died. Mrs Bartram presented this collection to the Mitchell Library in December 1978. She had previously presented another group of her father's photographs, in April 1972 (PXB 76). In January 1981 the donor presented biographical notes about her grandfather Rev Dr John Burgess (MLDOC 3300), where biographical information and further references regarding William Milne Burgess can be found.
