    Edward Spain served in H.M.S. Europe, 1783-1784, under Captain Arthur Phillip whom he criticises. Spain writes an extended commentary on Henry Brewer, Phillip's clerk and a Midshipman, who was appointed Provost Marshall in New South Wales.
