James Caddy, mining engineer of Beecroft, NSW served for 2 years in the St George's Rifles, Citizen Military Forces before embarking from Sydney on board HMAT A54 Runic, 9 Aug. 1915. Caddy served with the 17th Battalion, 3rd Reinforcement in Gallipoli Oct.-Dec. 1915 and transferred to 15th Field Company Engineers Nov. 1915. He served in France June 1916-Dec. 1918, and was promoted to Captain 6 May 1917 and Major 9 Dec. 1918. He was awarded the Military Cross for gallantry under fire at Bellicourt during the storming of the Hindenburg Line 29 Sept. 1918.
