Janis Wilton interviewed Heinz Harant in June or July 1978, for a study entitled 'Refugees : intellectual roots and impact of European migration to Australia, 1933-1956', run by Dr R J B Bosworth of the University of Sydney History Department. That study was a precursor to the subsequent oral history project initiated by the Ethnic Affairs Commission of NSW in 1981, a larger collection of immigrant recordings and also held in the SLNSW (Janis Wilton also had a major involvement in that project as interviewer and project manager.)

Heinz Harant was born in Vienna in 1919 and came to Australia just before the outbreak of WWII. He worked in Melbourne and then Sydney, where he formed the Ngunnagan Club, a youth group that began as an offshoot of the New Citizen Association, but became independent, and attracted young people who had recently immigrated to Australia. His papers concerning the Ngunnagan Club are also lodged in the Library at MLMSS 7245 Ngunnagan Club - records, 1950-1997.
