  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    Hedley Lawry Yelland (1906-2006) was born in Bega, a descendant of German immigrants who came to the South Coast of New South Wales in 1854. He won a scholarship to Sydney University and began his teaching career in 1927. He taught in schools in Goulburn, Newcastle and Lismore before becoming headmaster at Goulburn High School (1948-1949). He was an Inspector of Secondary Schools (1950-1956), Deputy Director of Secondary Education (1956-1965) and Director of Secondary Education (1965-1968). His superior was Sir Harold Wyndham. In 1969 he was appointed Education Member of the Public Service Board and during this time he was also Chairman of the Archives Authority of N.S.W. He retired in 1971 and spent the last years of his life in Albert Court, a retirement hostel in Edgecliffe.
