  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Gordon Ernest Howe was a Merchant Navy officer, and was stationed on the passenger-cargo ship Macdhui when it was sunk in Fairfax Harbour, Port Moresby, by Japanese bombers on 18 June 1942. After recovering from injuries sustained during the sinking of the Macdhui he joined the Royal Australian Navy Volunteer Reserve on 13 July 1942, where he was assigned to the Allied Amphibious Force. With this force he joined the fighting for Guadalcanal, where his knowledge of the islands assisted in many successful missions. Howe was discharged from the Royal Australian Navy on 7 May 1943, and on April 6 1944 was awarded the Legion of Merit. Gordon Howe passed away on 18 February 1996.
