  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Philip Joseph Holdsworth (1851-1902), public servant and writer, was born on 12 January 1851 at Sydney, and was educated at Fort Street High School. As early as 1869 Holdsworth was probably a sub-editor of the Illustrated Sydney News and became its editor in the 1880s. In the 1890s he contributed to a number of Sydney journals such as the Bulletin, Freeman's Journal and Athenaeum. He was a founding member of the Athenaeum Club in the early 1880s. Holdsworth's writing is of little permanent interest. He published only one book, Station Hunting on the Warrego … and Other Poems (Sydney, 1885). He died suddenly on 19 January 1902 at his home in Ocean Street, Woollahra.

Sir Mungo William MacCallum (1854-1942), educationist, scholar and administrator was born on 26 February 1854 at Glasgow, Scotland. Educated at High School, Glasgow, and the University of Glasgow, he graduated M.A. in 1877, well versed in classics, philosophy and literature.
In 1886, he was selected out of forty-five candidates to be the foundation professor of modern language and literature in the University of Sydney. MacCallum and his family arrived in February 1887. MacCallum died on 3 September 1942 at his home at Edgecliff,
