  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Thelma Afford (1908 - 1996) was an Australian costume designer, theatre performer, and fashion journalist who worked in Adelaide, Melbourne, and Sydney. Her rich practice took her from Broken Hill to Adelaide and Melbourne before she ended up as the senior art mistress at a private Sydney girls' school. She not only introduced art as a subject to South Australian schools but also designed costumes for early Australian TV drama.

Malcolm (Max) Afford (1906-1954), playwright and novelist, was born on 8 April 1906 at Parkside, Adelaide. On 16 April 1938 at St Michael's Anglican Church, Vaucluse, he married Thelma May Thomas, a costume designer; they were to remain childless. Afford died of cancer on 2 November 1954.
