  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    D. H. Lawrence (1885-1930), the English author, arrived in Sydney on 27 May 1922, accompanied by his wife Frieda. Shortly after they went to Thirroul on the N.S.W. south coast, renting a house named 'Wyewurk' at 3 Craig Street for two and a half months. 'Wyewurk' (there was a house called 'Wyewurrie' nearby), built by Thomas Irons in 1910, is one of the earliest houses in Australia constructed in the Californian bungalow style. He wrote the novel 'Kangaroo' here in six weeks. D. H. Lawrence and Frieda left Sydney on the ship 'Tahiti' in August 1922.

    D. H. Lawrence died on 2 March 1930 in Vence in the south of France, aged 44. He was buried in Vence, though in 1935 his body was exhumed and cremated and his ashes were removed to Taos, New Mexico.
