Charles Gilbert was a freemason and senior NCO in the 2/12 Australian Field Ambulance, AIF, attached to the 26th Brigade of the 9th Division for the invasion of Tarakan Island, Borneo, on 1 May 1945. He engaged with other freemasons and attended meetings of The Bagus Club (pronounced Bagush, meaning good in Indonesian).
