    Charles Gilbert was a freemason and senior NCO in the 2/12 Australian Field Ambulance, AIF, attached to the 26th Brigade of the 9th Division for the invasion of Tarakan Island, Borneo, on 1 May 1945. He engaged with other freemasons and attended meetings of The Bagus Club (pronounced Bagush, meaning good in Indonesian). This was one of the Masonic clubs begun in Port Moresby in 1942 for personnel on active service and spread throughout the South West Pacific Area
