  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

Arthur Lauriston Powell was born in Wiltshire in 1860. He was a son of George Powell the Rector of Sutton Veny, Wiltshire. He was an apprentice crew member on the ship La Hogue on it's voyages to Sydney in 1876, 1877 and 1878.
  • Scope and Content
This diary primarily records the voyage of the La Hogue from London in July 1878 to its arrival in Sydney in October 1878. Powell records the work of the crew on the ship and the weather as well as events on the ship such as the loss of an emigrant during bad weather. The La Hogue disembarked its passengers at the Quarantine Station in Sydney due to an outbreak of measles. Powell describes the process for disembarking the emigrants as well as selling of stores. He describes the work of the crew in repairing the ship whilst docked at Sydney and briefly notes his various excursions around Sydney and his meeting of locals. The ship left Sydney on 18 January 1879 and the diary continues with further work and weather details. They sight the island of Diego Ramirez near Cape Horn in February and narrowly avoid a collision with an iceberg. The diary stops abruptly in March 1879.
