    Josiah Spencer was born in 1841 in England. By 1870 he was the Rector at Christ Church in Grafton. He married Bessie Perry from Bendemeer in 1871. He was appointed the Chaplain in Cyprus in 1879 and was also the Inspector of schools. In 1896 he became the Archdeacon in Cyprus. He died in April 1901.

    These letters and letter fragments are written to Bessie Perry from Uralla, Gostwyck, Walcha, Tamworth, Urunga and Grafton as well as from Hawkchurch in England and
    en route to Cyprus. He discusses his missionary work in rural New South Wales, the problems of travel, their forthcoming marriage and people he visits on his pastoral travels, 1870-ca. 1879.

    A note from about 1901 records the death of Joshia's children and his death.
