The Rothbury Coal Mine, opened by the Merewether brothers in 1914, was to provide the funds to pay the Trustees of the Public Library of New South Wales the balance of the bequest made by their uncle David Scott Mitchell. Rothbury estate had earlier been the primary source of income for David Scott Mitchell
