  • ADMINISTRATIVE/ BIOGRAPHICAL HISTORY

    HMS Bounty was built in 1784 in Hull as a merchant ship. It was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1787 and renamed The Bounty. It was purchased for a voyage to Tahiti for the acquisition of breadfruits and for the transportation of the plants to the West Indies. The commanding officer was Lieutenant William Bligh. A mutiny took place in April 1789 and to escape detection, the mutineers burned the ship on 23 January, 1790.

  • General note

    The nail was recovered by Dr. Luis Marden from the National Geographic Society, Washington from the sea bed at Pitcairn Island in 1957.
