Arthur Edward Matthews, a gunsmith of Battersea, London enlisted with the A.I.F. at Liverpool, N.S.W. aged 24, 3 Jan. 1916. He was wounded in action 20 Apr. 1918 and returned to Australia on the Karoa 28 Mar. 1919 - Scope and Content‘The Campaign on the Somme in the Winter of 1916-17.' Typewritten narrative of events in France while serving with the 3rd Battalion, including his promotions to lance corporal, corporal and sergeant, with graphic descriptions of trench warfare in Picardy, Albert, Bapaume and with the 1st Brigade at Bullecourt, May 1917
